Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul

In the Chicken Soup for the Soul tradition, each story in this collection of short stories is a tear jerker, or rip your guts out w/ laughter. Months after putting the book down a few stories stayed w/ me.

Here are the most memorable stories from Chicken Soup for the Latino soul – as tested by none other than TIME itself.

12 feeding the soul
11 where rosaries ride the wind
10 cleaning crackers
9 the power to shine
8 la brava
7 Cuban kitchen dance
6 the promise
5 lavender roses
4 the bear
3 every first Friday
2 a hero’s story
1 dad the rock star of tamala makers

Pasteles are Taino

Puerto Ricans are known for their Pasteles. But did you know that pasteles are indeed of indigenous origin.

In fact, a type of pasteles – the “Mexican” tamale or tamalli in Nahuatl – can be traced back as early as 5000 BC.

According to Roberto Borrero who is considered a leading authority on ancient Taíno Indian culture,

Pasteles are "original Taino comfort food"

Puerto Rican Christmas Movie w/ Leguizamo & Debra Messing

It's Christmastime and the far-flung members of the Rodriguez family are converging at their parents' home in Chicago to celebrate the season and rejoice in their youngest brother's safe return from combat overseas.

At this family Christmas reunion the family bonds together in the face of crisis.

So, the Puerto Ricans, where they at?

According to Elizabeth Pena (La Bamba, Lone Star, Down and Out in
Beverly Hills and Rush Hour) "The fact that the movie got made, that we're portraying a Puerto Rican family as just like any other family, is a miracle."

The tagline for the movie is:
They're just the typical Ameican family.
Minus the Puerto Ricans.
Oops! I meant Minus the Typical!

Jennifer Lopez for NYS Senator

Now that Hillary Clinton will be the nation's Secretary of State, the position of NYS Senator is open. Who to fill that position? Word around town is mentioning the one, the ONLY, drum roll please... ...
Jennifer Lopez.

OK so it might be in jest but J-Lo's name is coming up in this political query. The real story is this: One of the possibilities for filling the coveted office of NYS Senator is a Kennedy, of course. Caroline Kennedy.

A 25-year veteran of Congress, Rep. Gary Ackerman likens Caroline Kennedy to Jennifer Lopez, saying that Caroline Kennedy is no more qualified than Jennifer Lopez.

"I wouldn't make J.Lo the senator unless she proved she had great qualifications, but we haven't seen them yet."

Let's read that again, shall we?:
I wouldn't make J.Lo the senator UNLESS...

Like my mom used to say,
¡Así es que empiezan!

Ricky Martin from Papi-Chulo to Papi-For Real

Ricky Martin is taking a break from politics. Remember earlier this year he was looking for an office in Washington, DC for his The Ricky Martin Foundation?

These days he's looking after his newborn TWINS
Valetino and Matteo
Born through a surrogate b/c Ricky Martin says: "Adoption was one option, but it's complicated and can take a long time. Surrogacy was an intriguing and faster option. I thought, 'I'm going to jump into this with no fear.'"

In this month's People en Español he also says: "I don't have a nanny. I'm doing this on my own because I don't want to miss a moment."

Ha! He thought was Livin' la Vida Loca
He has NO idea! :)

Shakira at Obama's Inauguration?

Can it be true that there will be hip shaking and hips on fire at the Presidential Inauguration?

Rumors some say. But they also say that "Hips don't lie" and rumors such as this one start somewhere. So we are left wondering for now. If it's true we'll all be dancing in the streets...

There's no Starbucks in El Barrio

"We don’t have a Starbucks in East Harlem yet, but we can imagine the scenario playing out. [it] will bring a Home Depot and a Target to the neighborhood. ... It’s not that we don’t want a better business climate in the neighborhood. We want more people visiting East Harlem’s historic treasures" says Exec. Dir. of Hope Inc. Robin LeBaron.

Well now there's no need for Starbucks
because right on the very corner of 104th and Lex is
The East Harlem Cafe
Launched by El Barrio's own Michelle Cruz,
who btw was also a delegate for Barack Obama!
See her interview on nytimes.com

Spacious, terracotta brown decor, display of local artists' work,
the unabashed Michelle Cruz says,
"the really hard part starts now that it's open.
Making sure the customers keep coming. "

If opening day was any indication,
Ms. Cruz better keep the coffee brewing
because it was attended by such notables as
Adam C. Powell IV and Jose Serrano Jr.,
and with a live performance of the quintessential Boricua,
Bomba and Plena musician Tato Torres.

Rumor has it that coffee will not be the only thing brewing
at the East Harlem Cafe because it is becoming
a meeting place to brew up ideas on keeping Starbucks out
and preserving the authenticity of Spanish Harlem.

One cup at a time!

Chinese Tacos?

Mexican foods are slowly popping up at fast food Chinese restaurants. Sure they have 2 different menus - the chinese one and the mexican one. But I still can't get over ordering a chicken fajita from el chino!

Seems like I'm not the only one that thinks so! Two Taco Bells in Shanghai closed earlier this year. The idea was "little rice and no beans", less spicy to accomodate the Chinese palate, and let's add sombreros to the waitresses. meandchairmanmao.com explains it best:

No my friends-- or should I say amigos?--
this is not the Taco Bell you are used to.
Here in China, it's a bit more upscale:
it's actually a sit-down restaurant with menus
instead of a reader board;
nice chairs and tables instead of easy-to-clean
but incredibly uncomfortable plastic booths ...
All that, plus free chips and salsa. ...
When it was all said and done,
I would have rather had a soft-taco supreme.

Sadly, that wasn't on the menu.

Hot Dogs ... Make way for the Chihuahua!

Street food vendors are pushing more than just hot dogs these days. In fact there is an annual street vendor awards- "Vendys". This year's winner of the coveted Vendy awards goes to... Calexico Carne Asado corner of Wooster and Prince Street. You can't miss this bright yellow cart with the word
"Eat the Street" emblazoned on it. The 3 Brothers ironically named Vendley, originally from Calexico - town between California and Mexico are serious about their food! They even have a website! calexicocart.com

One of the 5 finalists was a pupusa stand
owned by Rafael Soler in Red Hook Park in Brooklyn
Soler originally from the Dominican Republic started by
sewing pants for $3 a dozen when he came to this country.
Now together with his Salvadorian wife they make pupusas.
He says, "Sometimes I don't sleep, because it's very, very hard
[but] I don't lose nothing because
I feel super happy when they come to me every weekend.
Sometimes they don't buy nothing — they say,
'Hi, paisano! You O.K.?' This is what I like.
This is better than money."

Rafael... I'll give you $2 on Tuesday for a pupusa today!

Between Eva and J-Lo Lies a... Catfight!

This is a MORPHED pic of J-LO + Eva Mendez.

See both pics used on http://www.ladivalatina.com/quepasanov08B.html

Eva Mendes the Latina super-sexy actress refuses to be compared to super-successful, multi-titled, multi-talented Jennifer Lopez.

"I would like to think I will have a more serious career than J-Lo. We may both be of Latin origin but that's where the comparisons stop. She manages her career like the head of a big corporation, whereas the only thing I care about is becoming the best actress possible."

Perhaps Eva's latest role in "The Women" is a testament to her "serious acting". She played the sex kitten, complete with bustiere and garterbelt. But at least she was clothed, her role before that was the Calvin Klein Secret Obsessions perfume commercial where Eva bears all to the point that it is banned in the U.S.

Eva's right! There's no comparison!
J-Lo doesn't strip nude to sell perfumes that are not even hers.

Ugly Betty vs Loca Lohan

They say it's just rumors-
That Lindsay Lohan and America Ferrera are in a cat fight on the set of Ugly Betty
because Ferrera is "mean". Ferrera's reps deny these allegations. Either way, Lohan's role on Ugly Betty was cut from 6 shows to only 4.

On October's cover of Seventeen Magazine, America Ferrera says it best,
"Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows."

"Like, if you're watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, ...

and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other."

Latinas: The New Leading Ladies

Gabriella Montez is the leading girl in High School Musical 3.
This Latina character is perhaps as mainstream as we wanted to be:
The girl that gets the guy. The nice girl.
Smart, wholesome- LATINA!
No stereotypes, no accents added.
There's only one catch...
This coveted Latina role...
is played by a white girl.
Are there ANY teenage Latinas out there?
Selena Gomez - Wizards of Waverly Place?
Was she busy w/ Another Cinderella Story?
Adrienne from The Cheetah Girls?
Was she too busy to catch up with her?

Barbara Por Atras

Talk about lost in translation! When in English you say, “You look skinny”, the English response is "Thanks!”

When in Spanish someone tells you , “Te vez flaca", the Spanish response is not as good. Your Latina ego is now shattered and you wondered if you should have had that second serving of arroz con pollo.

“Flaca” is not a compliment. And I dare you to translate into English “Gordita”. Gordita is a compliment. Any self respecting Latina would rather be gordita than a flaca!

Living Latina in the US comes with all these contradictions. So Barbara Trujillo- Gomez said it best in her introduction for her book Bárbara Por Atrás: A Latin Women’s Guide to Fitness. She says, “I will never look like those skinny models or friends for that matter because I, with pride and gratitude, am a Cuban – American woman who was blessed to be born with the asset of an ass."

Pretty bold statement!

Keep reading and see what else she has to say in her new book!

Consejos de mi Tia

I learned from my Tía who migrated
from Cuba, not just the language and
culture but even more basic than that:
how to cure the common sore throat or
headache, or just about any pain or
ailment you might have.

One of the first cure from my Tía that I
remember is with a common household
item found in the kitchen cabinet. I
remember when I was ten I was on
Miami Beach with my great aunts and
uncles is migrated from Cuba. They
would pull out the white Volkswagen
station wagon with black interior and
pile us up inside. We would head over
the bridge to Miami Beach and find a
spot (same spot every time) under the
large cabana. Once the car was
unloaded and the towels were laid down
my cousins and I would run to the
water.

Well, one day we were out there from 8
in the morning to 6. We were
SHISHKABOBED!

Gramita's BFF

“Nacha es Gramita’s B.F.F.” Jeannie explained to her 5 year old daughter, Puchi.

Her 5-year old daughter’s eyes widen.  “Whoa! Gramita has a B.F.F.!?!”

“Yes and she’s a true B.F.F.  Tia Nacha is 71!  Can’t get more of a Best Friend Forever than that!”

Jeannie and her daughter get in their car to pick up Gramita to begin the trek from the Bronx to Brooklyn.  Meanwhile Gramita is rummaging through a mental checklist to make sure she has everything.  The door bell rings.   Before heading out the door, she enters her bedroom, stands in front of the oversized, glow-in-the-dark rosary and makes the sign of the cross.  She closes her eyes for a second before leaving.

As Gramita steps in the car, she exhales deeply as if she was holding her breath for the last few minutes.  “Pues, ojalá, te recuerdas como llegar a Brooklyn.”  “Just give me the address, Mamá.”

Back then Jeannie was Puchi's age, they traveled by bus and train all the way to Brooklyn.  They visited Nacha at least once a month.  Jeannie starts unfurling the folds of her memory to figure out when was the last time she saw Nacha.  Like always, Gramita must have read her mind.  “La última vez que vimos a Nacha fue el año pasado.  La trajo su hija, que vino desde Colorado.”

How can Jeannie forget!  Jeannie’s mother’s BFF’s daughter, Yvette.  She would be like a cousin to Jeannie.  Jeannie looked up to her b/c she was a “teenager”.   Yvette in turn thought of Jeannie like someone to look after.  Yvette never played with her as she wished now she had, but always kept a close eye on her from afar.  Heaven forbid she was seen playing jump rope with an 8-year old!  Instead, Yvette would sit on the stoop

Record-breaking Mariah Carey Reclaiming Her Latina-ness

Mariah Carey newest CD E=MC2
started like only a DIVA can -
with a record -breaking hit single.
Touch My Body is Mariah's 18th chart-topper
breaking Elvis Presley's record for the most No. 1 singles
on the Billboard Hot 100 for a solo artist.

In that record breaking song
Mariah sends a gentle reminder of her Latinidad.
Her lyrics say:
I want you to caress me
Like a tropical breeze
And float away with you
In my Caribbean Sea

Mariah's second release for E=MC2
is a song dedicated to her Venezuelan father "Bye Bye"
which she performed on American Idol.

If you're still not convinced of mariah's pride in being Latina,
here is what she said about breaking Elvis' record:

For me, in my mind the accomplishment
is just that much sweeter," she said.
"In terms of my ethnicity, always feeling like an outsider,
always feeling different ... for me it's about saying,
'Thank you Lord, for giving me the faith
to believe in myself when other people had written me off.' "

Fergie and her Mexican Bisabuela

Fergie admits that her father's grandmother
is from Mexico and that she loves the
Mexican side of her heritage.

“I don’t go around claiming it big time,”
Fergie explained, “because there are
many more full-bred Latinas
that are out there to represent.”

“Yes, I have Mexican in my ancestry,” said Fergie.
“My Dad's grandmother was born in Guanajuato.
I’m very proud of it; that’s probably where I get my fire!
I’m mostly Scottish-Irish, though.”

If Fergie really wants to be proud of her Mexican roots
she should rephrase that:
"That's where i get my ambition, my drive.
That's what makes me so dynamic."
Heck she can say - that's what makes me so beautiful!

So for now, no Fergie, you're still a white girl.
The coolest white girl in town but still you're a...
blanquita, gringa, con un bisabuela mexicana.

National Turn OFF the TV Week April 21-28 2008

Crayola has activities for you online for National turn Off Week.
After reading about cartoonist Pulitzer Prize winner
Michael Ramirez, drawing doesn't seem like such a bad idea!

Here are some facts about TV:

# minutes / week average child watches TV: 1,680
# minutes / week parents spend in meaningful conversation with
their children: 38.5

% of children who have TV's in their bedrooms: 50
% of day care centers that use TV during a typical day: 70

A poll performed by the Associated Press in August 2007
reported that one-quarter of all Americans have not read a book in
the past year.

"The picture on the TV changes every five or six seconds, either by
changing the camera angle or cutting to an entirely new scene,"
writes Moody. "One researcher refers to these events as jolts per
minute, noting that as time is cut up, the brain is conditioned to
change at the expense of continuity of thought.

Americans spends 170 minutes/day watching TV,

U.S. Congress says Jan 2009 analog broadcast signals will be switched off. All TV transmission will be produced digitally. Without some type of converter box non-digital TV will be useless. So in 2009 -- let your TV die a natural death.

Vatican Adds 7 New Sins- Why is J-Lo a sinner? ¡Ay Virgen!

The Vatican has announced 7 new sins due to this new age of globalization!
Bishop Gianfranco Girotti from the Vatican explains,
“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor’s wife,
but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos.”

Without further ado the new sins are: polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice.

The original 6th century broad seven deadly sins:
lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride.

Does that mean "obscenely rich" J-Lo is a sinner?
Remember the twins' diamond studded maracas?
Not if she is charitable. The Vatican says,
"The poor are always becoming poorer and the rich ever more rich, feeding unsustainable social injustice."

So, is J-lo charitable? Word around her old Bronx neighborhood says that she secretly donates to community organizations to keep them up and running and insists that she doesn't want anyone to know. Who knew!?!
And that is the underground word- so it must be true!

And so now we must look at ourselves, if you pollute - you are a sinner!
Repent and clean up after yourself!

Jose Feliciano Will Sing for the Pope

Jose Feliciano is a Roman Catholic, practicing in the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut. His Bishop, William Lori, invited Jose, his wife, Susan, and three children to the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium on April 20.

It was made known to the “Powers That Be” that because of this esteemed invitation,
Jose would be returning home early from his tour.

Subsequently Bishop’s Office called enthusiastically wanting Jose to participate in the pre-Mass concert. Of course, Jose saw it as an immense honor.

Three songs have been chosen in accord with the Holy Father’s theme of “Hope”:
“Lean On Me,” by Bill Withers
“Que Sera,” an international hit song for Feliciano
and the Lee Greenwood classic, “God Bless The USA.”

Gerry House, the morning man at WSIX-Nashville, played some Spanish language country songs to "broaden their listener base". Angry callers called in saying they didn't want another culture being "forced" on them. Then he played the new single by Gone
Country winner Julio Iglesias Jr.

Let's go back and remember that Julio Iglesias (Jr.'s father) had one of the biggest cross-over country hits ever with Willie Nelson: To All the Girls I Loved Before.

Julio Iglesias

Currently on his 2008 World Tour, forty years later after the start of his unparalleled international musical career -over 250 million albums sold in 14 languages- Julio Iglesias is still melting hearts away. In his 2008 world tour, "Julio Iglesias in Concert", he is delighting his audiences with his classic songs, "Manuela", "Quijote", "Me Olvidé de Vivir", "Hey!", "Abrázame", "El Amor", "Un Canto a Galicia", and many more songs from his spectacular international career.

Did you know? In 2006, he recorded for the first time in Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Indonesian, and Filipino. Also did you know he's a lawyer? In June 2001 he finished his law degree at Madrid Spain's Complutense University, fulfilling the promise he made to his then 84-year-old father that he would eventually graduate after dropping out 35 years ago to pursue his music career. He received a certificate as a lawyer from Cambridge University.

Juio Iglesias is in the US for his 2008 World Tour beginning April 3rd in California.

Dayanara Torres, Marc Anthony's Ex, Tell ALL Book

Ex- Miss Universe / Ex-Mrs. Marc Anthony, Dayanara Torres, plans to write a book about her tumultous marriage to J-Lo's now-husband, Marc Anthony. It sounds like a story we all want to know. A story of Miss Beauty Queen -of the Universe no less-
marries a salsa crooner - not once but TWICE! Remember that? He married her 2 times!
Then leaves her from one day to the next to marry someone else. What can be more fabulous than marrying Ms. Universe? Marrying J-LO, of course. Great story! I know I want to know! That is if the Ex-Miss Universe / Ex-Marc Anthony doesn't get "ex-ed" out by J-Lo who has already stopped HER ex-husband from writing a tell-all book.

Let's see who has the last word....

Geraldo Rivera's HIS PANIC

Geraldo Rivera has written a new book, His Panic: Why America Fears Hispanics in the U.S. His Panic discusses the anti-immigration propaganda led by who he calls "right-wing talk show thugs" and "neo-know-nothings" and says the immigration "crisis" is based on lies, false-statistics and downright and ugly racism.

Let's remember that Geraldo Rivera has received more than 170 awards for journalism, including prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, and three national and seven local Emmys.

Call him what you'd like but Geraldo Rivera is attacking the anti-Hispanic / anti-immigration sentiment that is rampant in the media with eyebrow raising statistics, naming names, and plain old "I'm glad someone is saying something!"

Marc and Jenny named their twins
Max and Emme - Maximiano and Emelina.
They should be called "Millionario and ImaDiva"!

Reportedly it cost $1.4 million just to go into labor which includes the room which was reserved weeks in advance, security, and private doctors and nurses. Their nursery was painted by a color-therapist. Their bedsheets are 600-count Egyptian cotton. And the baby masseuse comes in 2x a week. Shakira's $3000 Bra

Shakira sold her bra on Ebay to benefit children in Colombia. The charity auction sold Shakira's jewelled bra designed by Roberto Cavall and worn on her 2007 Oral Fixation world tour for $3100. The gold outfit seen here on the left was also sold for an amazing $2716. Shakira's fans didn't just want her clothes though. A fan also bid $14,000 just to meet her. The $76,000 raised goes to Shakira's Bare Feet Foundation, which is building a school for impoverished children in northern Colombia.

Let's see.... I'll take Shakira's hair for $2,000.

The WonderBra: Listed Among Greatest Inventions

According to a survey in Canada the Wonderbra is the 5th greatest Canadian invention outpacing even the pacemaker! Created in the 1960's, at the time of bra-burning, a Canadian named Louise Poirier developed the first Wonderbra. Today's Wonderbra is virtually identical to its original. The Wonderbra made its U.S. debut in 1994 and instantly sold at a rate of one every 15 seconds!

What makes the Wonderbra so special? "Precision engineering": three-part cup construction, precision-angled back and underwire cups, removable pads called cookies- all-in-all the Wonderbra had 54 design elements that lifted and supported.

The Wonderbra revolutionized the way women thought about their bras and, not only that, but how they looked in them.

In the Heights on Broadway

Home is where the Hood is! Celebrate Dominican Independence Dayby going to see the critically acclaimed Broadway Show In the Heights. Although, you don't have to be from the Heights or even Dominican to enjoy this show! This is a wonderful play for anyone who is from“the block”, any block, any neighborhood. Washington Heights in New York to Boyle Heights in Los Angeles.

It’s about community and what it means to be home. In the minds of young Latinos going back home really means going back to the Barrio. In the Heights is about the loving people in a close-knit community dealing with the question should we stay or should we go? The message is clear that if even if you go, the Heights, be it Washington Heights or Boyle Heights, will always be a part of you, anywhere you go. Home is where the Hood is!
