From the BUS to the BENZ

2010 was the year i got the BENZ!  wow!  seems like yesterday.... where does the time go!  that damn benz changed my life!  it really did!  people treat me differently.  friends and strangers alike....

i remember strangers....

like i went thru the drive thru and ordered a mchicken and a mccafe and he was waiting for  me to pay him. i was looking thru my purse and thru the car and i said:  sorry:  its these 27 cents that kills me... as in ha! ha!  funny right?  usu i would get a laugh .  he just looked at me like: WHATEVER.  then i realized- gasp!  im driving a benz so he could give a damn if im looking for spare change.  if only he knew... im one of him!  just yesterday i was on the bus!

how bout the time we went to home depot... we needed an AC and so we drove in and Vic from the car window calls out to the guys outside home depot and asks one of them- Cuanto para que me ayuden instalar un aire condicionado?

the dude said without flinching some astronomical number and Vic was like "OH-OH!  y por que tanto?!"
so vic tellls him- that we will go buy the AC and get back to him.  so we park and we walk in and we are still talking about why he wanted so much just to install the AC? then it hit me!  "VIC!  u asked him with your head sticking out the window of a BENZ.  yeah.... thats why!  we should come back in your car."

and then there were my friends...

Pernil and Pumpkin Pie

With 4 generations around the Christmas kitchen table my cousin Guapo bravely observed the following: “I am the only one here whose 1st language was English.”

Tio Ismael, who served in the Army, deftly dodges that bullet by saying, “I speak some German. Wanna hear?”

He turns to one of the youngest on the grand table, Papito, “Kann ich bitte noch ein Bier?”

Papito is flabbergasted!  “Tio, did you just curse me out?” “No!” Tio answered.  “I just said: Can I have some beer please?” From near the head of the table,

Guapo’s cousin, MissyFoo says to Tio Israel, “I'm sure that's the first thing you learned when you got there.”

Tio is undeterred.  “I know some French too!  Comment t-allez vous?”

My GringaMom at the head of the table says "Fermez la bouche! Yeah that means! Shut your mouth!"

MissyFoo decides to get in on the action, ...

Who is GOING LATIN? You'll be surprised!

So many people want that Latin je ne se quoi...
And so many want that Latina American yo no se que

Here are some people who have gone LATINO lately!

  • First luxury cars.  How do you say Rolls Royce in Spanish?  Yes the Rolls Royce Goes Latin! I'm not sure but I'm guessing there is a lot of rolling of the R's!  either way, you may want to ask Tony Bennett.
  • With his newest release, Tony Bennett Goes Latin. Mr. I-Left-My-Heart-In-San-Fransico seems to have left it for some LATIN flair.
  • What's next- an opera with salsa beats?  You guessed it! The Moore Opera Center goes Latin!

Rock on and Read on!  Ole!

Opera goes LATIN with Salsa Beats!

Opera.  With salsa music beats.

Photo: npr.org  Magali and Chucho
(Zheng Cao and Scott Hendricks) pose for the crowd
while cutting their wedding cake in Daniel Catán's
Latin composer David Catan, composed a whole opera with Latin Caribbean rhythms.  Seems difficult to believe.  But Catan's first opera was so successful that the Houston Grand Opera premiered "Salsipuedes" - an opera about...

A banana republic declares war on the Nazis and newlywed salsa musicians are caught in the crossfire. Love is put to the test in this bittersweet comedy that sways to the sultry rhythms of the Caribbean. Sung in Spanish with English translations projected above the stage.

Opera. Salsa music.

Salsipuedes: A Night of Love, War, and Anchovies is not a typical night at the opera.

Tony Bennett, American Big Band and Jazz singer, famous for 1930's styled songs such as, "Because of You"  and "I left My Heart in San Francisco" has now gone LATIN.

Seems like he left San Francisco to go sing "The Way You Look Tonight" with none other than Latina Diva THALIA!

Just in time for the holidays his newest CD is VIVA Duets.

Rolls Royce goes LATIN!

Photo: motorward.com
How do you say Rolls Royce in Latin?  Not sure but it probably involves a whole lot of rolling of R's!

Expanding its reach in global markets, Rolls Royce has opened its first showroom in Latin America at Sao Paolo, Brazil. The showroom is spread over 500 sq meters and is designed to provide clientele with a relaxed atmosphere when they come in to purchase the car of their choice.

Glass and wood has been used effectively to maximize usage of natural light. Leather, veneer, carpet samples and bespoke utilities peculiar to Rolls Royce vehicles are also on display in the Customer Lounge space. The opening was followed by a cocktail party which included drinks and music and was attended by a number of VIP's.

Real Divas of the World

This week it's all about Real Divas of the world.  Like for instance:

  • Soprano Venezuelan opera singer Fedora Aleman turns 100 years old and claims to know the secret to youth...  And no!... major re-constructive surgery is not the answer.. Read here.

  • But if you're into "construction", check out this home fit for a real DIVA- as in the walls are constructed with ACOUSTICS in mind... Read here.

  • Finally, this visual artist used a less destructive means to "re-construct": herself into a DIVA by drastically changing her appearance, but instead of a scalpel, her instrument of change is a paintbrush... Read here.

Visual Artist Transforms Herself into a DIVA with Her Artwork

The word Diva conjures up images of celebrated women dripping with style, class and attitude. However, one thing we must be clear on - Divas are not just elegant prima donnas or pampered and kept women. To achieve Diva status requires much more. A Diva is a talented woman with extraordinary determination combined with self - assurance and a touch of mystery.

"Diva" - "Tropicalism" exhibit Jersey City Museum, New Jersey
One might say that a Diva has succeeded in creating an aura so convincing and tangible that she surpasses mere mortals. Mass media and advertising today bring us thousands of images daily of seductive, young svelte women who portray themselves as Divas. A small number of which (who financially can) actively act on becoming Divas by means of plastic surgery. Luckily for those we’re in an age where they can accomplish those goals.

"Divas" is new digitized work by visual artist Maria Domínguez where she makes light of this contagious phenomenon of maintaining youth and acquiring beauty through surgery. Through the magic of digital self-enhancement she explores those possibilities and takes it a step further into modern design.

In Divas, without the trauma and cost of surgery, Domínguez manipulates her photographed body and

Puerto Rico gets a shot at being the 51st state

so obama wins the election by a landslide. BIG.

marijuana is legalized in 2 states. BIGGER news.

gay marriage is legalized in 2 states. BIG. BIG.

and Puerto Rico votes to become 51st state.

zzzzzz. ----what? sorry i fell asleep. they did WHAT!

I was on facebook yesterday discussing the historic election in Puerto Rico.

so here is some of that information on my blog:

I was There!  Journey to DC to See Obama's Inauguration!

Future President of the USA Could Be Born in the 51st State

President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii the 50th state added to the United States back in 1959.

A mere 2 years later, in 1961, Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.

Therefore if Puerto Rico becomes the 51st state,

a future president could be PUERTO RICAN! :)

I was THERE! Journey to DC to See OBAMA

I was THERE! Journey to DC to See OBAMA
by Brie Sands (my GringaMom)

originally published 2009 here http://ladivalatina.com/iwasthere.html

I was there! After having lived through the sixties and having missed many (ok, all) historical events, I was not going to miss this, even if I had to walk to Washington!

As soon as Obama won the Presidency and hearing Obama say, “The road ahead will be long…our climb will be steep… I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there… I promise you…” I quickly made a promise to myself not to miss this historical event!

I am going! Don’t think I can get tickets. Don’t know how I will get there, but I am going! This reminded me of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech in August 1963, (even though I was not there) when Dr. King began his speech and said: “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation…” I had to memorize it from the history books.

It was exhilarating! From preparing to go to DC, to inviting family and friends to join me on my trip, to hearing Obama speak. Our friend from England, who came home to the U.S. to see this historic event, joined us on our trip to DC and she kept saying, “It’s all in the journey…we will get there…yes, we can…yes, we will.”

Colony of the United States

50 states? not last i checked! and maybe not for much longer!

Estado Libre Asociado - Puerto Rico IS part of the United States!

Puerto Rico - the next 51st state. the People Have Voted!

Que bonita bandera, Que bonita bandera... Que bonita bandera... ¿la bandera de los EEUU?

When I heard the news I couldn't think straight for 3 hours. Then I googled it.  NADA.  An eerie silence surrounding this very important current news event.

I told my cousin in PR that I didn't hear any news about it here.  She said: you have to listen to the news in PR. But NO.  If its going to be a state of the US it should be news here in the US.  It's our news.  The 51st state?  Then it's US news.

According to news reports, Puerto Ricans were jubilant after this election with cars honking their horns and people waving Puerto Rican flags.  Yes, you read correctly.  PUERTO RICAN flags.  Seems strange.  If they want statehood they should be waving the US flag.

House Built for a Diva- No 2 Walls are Parrallel and Other Diva Requests

Being a diva has its downsides. To perform in operas like "Madame Butterfly" and "Tosca," Patricia Racette—a leading American soprano—who says, "There's a misperception that opera singers' lives are really exciting. A lot of our time is spent making sure we stay healthy so we can sing."

Therefore she built her mansion to do just that- to help keep her voice opera diva like!

Here are some diva-like aspects of her home:

No 2 walls are parallel to each other so that when music is played the music can literally fill up the entire room.

Opera Diva Fedora Aleman Turns 100 and Reveals Secret to Youth

According to opera diva Fedora Aleman, the secret to eternal youth is breathing deeply.  She should know this opera soprano, Venezuelan sweetheart,  just celebrated her 100th birthday!

"Respiro a fondo siempre", confesaba en una entrevista en 1982. Todavía aconseja hacerlo a sus familiares y amigos. Para ella es sinónimo de vida.

If you think about it, she's right breathing is synonymous with life! There is something to be learned from this 100 year old opera diva!  On her website fedoraaleman.com/pagina.php?pag_id=2, she explains in detail the importance of deep breathing.

Lo que NO debemos hacer:
Abusar de las cuerdas vocales, tratar de cantar más fuerte, forzando, fumar, gritar, cantar en un registro equivocado, cantar hasta cansarse.

She explains that breathing not only profundamente but also correctly, is important for more than one reason.

Speedy Gonzalez and other famous Mexicans

So Kassie is visibly upset.  I see her talking to her uncle (my cousin) Joselito.  So I walk over to them and she explains:

I can’t believe he’s so ignorant!  How dare he?  How dare he call me a Mexican!

He said what?

“He said to me: oh, your last name’s Gonzalez.  You must be Mexican.”

Joselito sees the humor in it, “You know why he thinks you’re Mexican right?  Cuz of Speedy Gonzalez!”

Still feverish in her Puerto Rican/Irish anguish, “Well I never!”

What can I say to her?  “You know what, the next time he or anybody calls you a Mexican!!!!.... you… you…. You say ‘Thank you.’”

I said it with such sincerity that she just looks at me.

“Yeah.  Thank you. “

Joselito liked my answer, “Yeah!  What’s wrong with Speedy Gonzalez?”

Growing up Gonzales

For some R and R, you might want to go see an off-Broadway show.

If you want to R, R and R, that would be, Rest, Reminisce, and Reirte, go see Growing up Gonzales.

Growing up Gonzales takes place mostly in the 1970’s, with just a few minutes in present time, showing the older brother reading the younger brother's, Cisco's, diaries.

This is a one man show played by Luis Antonio Ramos.  By playing several roles, Luis Antonio Ramos shows his acting prowess as well as his comedic agility.

Cisco grows up with Bruce Lee, as a hero, Old Spice as a favorite gift for his father, Iris Chacon as the “original booty - J-Lo has nothing on her”, baseball as his favorite past time, the Catholic church as the mystical weekly production, and 'living off the land' vacations in Puerto Rico (who needed summer camp in the 70's?  Ha!)

Chris Brown's Tribute to Mexico--- NOT!

Chris Brown tattoo's rihanna's face after he beat her up all black and blue...

oh wait!  wait.  no.  not at all.

its a tattoo of a tribute to Mexico's day of the dead, a mexican day of the dead skull.

of course.

I'm utterly speechless.

Made in China. or made in MEXICO?

According to NASDAQ.com, Mexico may become the new CHINA for the following reasons:

  • Cost of Mexican workers is now less than cost of Chinese workers
  • Mexico's proximity to the US makes shipping faster
  • Duty-free goods due to NAFTA
  • Mexican median population is generally younger

As a result, many US manufactures are now shifting production to Mexico from China. Last year, Mexico's manufactured exports were more than the rest of Latin America combined.

No Golden Arches of McDonald's in El Salvador

McDonald's Golden Arches may have to be covered up in El Salvador says a court in that country.

McDonald's is in a contract dispute and owes a former franchise owner $23.9 million dollars.

The world's most famous burger business should have a few million, no?   If not, they should sell one of their golden arches to pay their debt.

According to the Court in El Salvador, if McDonald's fails to pay the famous golden arches must come down.

The El Salvador court hasn't set a date for payment so in the meantime, pass me some fries.

Lawyer posts pic of defendant's underwear on facebook

Anything you say can and will be posted on Facebook.

And in Miami apparently, this young attorney thought that naything yu WEAR can also be used against you and posted on facebook.

The attorney took a cell phone picture of her defendants (her client) leopard print underwear and posted it on facebook.  with the caption " proper attire for trial".

And no, Defendant wasn't one of those wearing his pants off his ass.

Instead, Defendant's  family brought him a bag of fresch cothes to wear during trial.  When Miami-Dade Corrections Officers lifted up the  pieces for a routine inspection, his public defender Anya Cintron Stern snapped a photo of defendant's briefs with her cellphone, and posted it on Facebook.

Proposed "Snooki" Law in Jersey

Jersey Shore Snooki might get a law named after her.  New Jersey Assemblyman Ronald Dancer is proposing a bill.  He explains:

"This bill will permit local officials to make sure taxpayers don't get 'Snook'-ered or public safety is compromised when reality stars such as Snooki or JWoww come to town," Dancer said.

The law would not prevent drunken reality stars from stumbling down the streets, Dancer said. "I can't go as far as to say that would not happen."

Rosie Perez gets BROOKLYN with Mitt Romney

Rosie Perez goes Brooklyn on Mitt Romney.

She's eloquent, poignant, hysterical and pure 100% LATINA.

She mocks Romney's videotaped comment saying:
My Dad, you probaby know who, was the Governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company, but he was born in Mexico. Had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this but he was not.  I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino.

Hey... Romney started it.  He's the one that said he was "joking"!  Rosie Perez therefore had no choice but to get Brooklyn on him and send the joke right back!

Latinos spend HOW MUCH on smartphones?

As of September 2012, 45% of all American adults own a smartphone

Hispanics are 17 percent more likely than “non-Hispanic whites” to use mobile phones to access the Internet - and 20 percent more likely to watch video on them.

Ninety percent of Hispanics, ages 18-29, have cell phones.

Almost three in five Hispanic mobile subscribers use smartphones

stop and frisk. there's an app for that!

Don't just use your cell as just a "toy"  or a status symbol.

Now you can use your phone for social change.

That's right.  There is a STOP & FRISK app that helps record and notify the NYCLU of police stop & frisk incidents.

The reason:

An NYCLU analysis showed that black and Latino males between the ages of 14 and 24 accounted for 41.6 percent of stops in 2011, though they make up only 4.7 percent of the city’s population. The number of stops of young black men exceeded the city’s entire population of young black men.

Let's use our phones proactively!  Together we can change this law!

Are you dumber than your smartphone?

photo:  http://pocho.com/spellcheck-fails-mobile-spanglish-manglish/
My new Galaxy S3 is the best phone ever!!!

What I love is that it is BILINGUAL!

On the keyboard I can just toggle between English and Spanish.

or if most of the message is in English and its only that one word i need in Spanish, I can just key in the word and then click on " add to dictionary".  In essence my smartphone is learning SPANGLISH!

I can text "dont be a pendejo"  and save the word "pendejo" and the next time my Galaxy S3 will know that word.

How cool is that?

So for you monolinguals out there... the answer would be YES!  you are dumber than you smartphone!  :p

Monolinguals ... don't be a pendejo.... practice your espanol!

Spider Man - color him half- puerto rican!

About a year ago, Peter Parker becomes half black half puerto rican.

Now, to reflect US racial realities, Spider-Man has been given a makeover - as a half-black, half-Latino teen.
Miles Morales has replaced Peter Parker as the face behind the famous webbed mask.

Color Wonder Woman - LATINA!

According to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/wonder-woman-the-cw-amazon-show_n_1862365.html?utm_hp_ref=tv

The CW is prepping a TV series following Wonder Woman's origin with a script from Allan Heinberg. Currently titled "Amazon," the series would follow Diana as a young Amazon princess, before she becomes the superhero in the star-spangled shorts.

Lynda Carter made Wonder Woman a TV icon in the 1970s when she starred as the Amazon princess for three seasons.
“I am delighted to hear this news," Carter told The Huffington Post when asked about the new CW project. "Wonder Woman is a fantastic, inspirational character who should be introduced to a new generation. I wish them great luck and look forward to seeing it on air."

There's nothing like the original Wonder Woman!  Which is probably why the NBC  Wonder Woman series didn't last too long!  If they really want  Wonder Woman back, they should make her LATINA :)
